Newspaper description: "In addition to this extensive combination, there are a number of mechanical stops, such as couplers for the Manuals, Pedal &c., all assisting to make this the largest and most perfect organ in the city. Some idea may be formed of its size when we say that the largest pipe is about 16 feet long and 12 inches in diameter; from which size the pipes diminish in length and diameter until they are no larger than a short pencil . Their entire number is about 1500."

From the Ohio County Public Library Flickr site: "It [St. Matthew's] was purchased by the Wheeling Baptist Society in March of 1866 for $8,000. The First Baptist congregation remained in the Greek Revival church building on Byron Street until 1958 when it became the House of Prayer. Later, it housed the congregation of the Church of God's Saints of Christ. Most recently, it was purchased by the Wheeling National Heritage Area Corporation (WNHAC) to be used as a community center and performance venue under the name of 'The Blue Church'."

This entry describes an original installation of a new pipe organ. Identified by Steven Bartley, citing information from this publication: Wheeling Daily Intelligencer 4/11/1868, pg. 4. Organ placed in a recess in the NE corner of the room, with large arches on two sides. manuals = 56 notes, pedal = 25 notes.
